Where the Elephant Walks and the Mara Calls
9 Days · Nairobi · Amboseli · Nyeri · Lake Naivasha · Maasai Mara
Kenya is a country that earns its reputation every single day. This nine-day journey moves through four of its most iconic landscapes, each one utterly distinct from the last, each one capable of stopping you mid-sentence. It begins in Amboseli, where elephant herds of extraordinary size move across the plains with Mount Kilimanjaro rising white and immense behind them – a scene so perfectly composed it hardly seems real. It continues through the central highlands to Nyeri, where the forest edge meets the mountain and wildlife gathers quietly in the night. It pauses at Lake Naivasha, where the birdlife is extraordinary and the hippos never stray far from shore.
The journey ends in the Maasai Mara, where the plains roll on forever and the predators are everywhere if you know where to look. Nine days of Kenya, private and unhurried, from first game drive to final morning.
Detailed Safari

Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi
Nairobi
Your Wondrous Wild team meets you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport from the moment you land. A private transfer takes you to your Nairobi hotel, and the rest of the day is yours entirely – time to settle in, rest after the journey, and let the quiet anticipation of what lies ahead begin to build. Tomorrow, the wilderness starts.

Day 2: South to Amboseli
Nairobi · Amboseli National Park
After breakfast, the drive south toward Amboseli begins, and it does not take long for the landscape to shift. The city gives way to open plains, and then, on the horizon, Mount Kilimanjaro appears – Africa’s highest peak, snow-capped and impossibly vast, watching over the parklands below. Amboseli is famous for its elephants, and with good reason: the herds here are among the largest and most studied on the continent. Your first afternoon game drive introduces you to them on their own terms, the mountain a constant backdrop to everything.

Day 3: Amboseli, All Day
Amboseli National Park
A full day in Amboseli is a day well spent. Morning and afternoon game drives explore the park’s varied terrain: open plains, seasonal swamps, acacia woodland, and the edges of the marshes where wildlife concentrates in the greatest numbers. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, and a remarkable diversity of birdlife share this ecosystem, all of it framed by the mountain that defines Amboseli more than any other feature. There is a particular quality to the light here in the late afternoon that photographers come back for again and again.

Day 4: Into the Highlands, Up to Treetops
Amboseli · Mt. Kenya
The route north carries you through Kenya’s central highlands, the landscape climbing and greening as the lowland plains are left behind. Nyeri sits at the foot of Mount Kenya, a town with its own quiet character, and from here a short transfer reaches the historic Treetops Lodge. Elevated above a waterhole deep in the forest, Treetops offers something rare in safari travel: the chance to sit still as the wildlife comes to you. As dusk falls and the forest settles into evening, the waterhole begins to fill with life.

Day 5: The Rift Valley and the Lake
Mt Kenya · Lake Naivasha
Descending from the highlands into the Great Rift Valley is one of Kenya’s great scenic moments. The scale of the escarpment, the breadth of the valley floor, the sense of geological time written into the landscape – it is a drive that asks you to look up. Lake Naivasha waits at the bottom of it all, a freshwater lake fringed with papyrus and yellow fever trees, alive with birdlife and home to hippos that surface and submerge throughout the day. An optional boat ride on the lake in the afternoon puts you among them at close quarters.

Day 6: The Road to the Mara
Lake Naivasha · Maasai Mara
Today’s drive brings the journey to its grand finale destination. The Maasai Mara’s reputation precedes it, and yet arriving never quite loses its impact. The reserve receives you in the afternoon with an immediate game drive across the open savannah – your guide settling into the rhythms of the Mara, reading the terrain, tracking the movement of animals that have called these plains home for longer than the roads that cross them. The evening at camp feels earned.

Day 7: A Full Day in the Mara
Maasai Mara
The Mara at its fullest. Morning drives find the big cats most active in the cool early hours – lion, leopard, and cheetah each with their own territory, their own story unfolding. Vast herds of plains game move across the grasslands throughout the day. When the Great Migration is in season, the wildebeest come in numbers that make the ground tremble. An optional visit to a traditional Maasai village in the afternoon adds a human chapter to a day otherwise defined by the wild. The afternoon game drive brings the day full circle, the light fading slowly over the plains.

Day 8: Last Drive, Then Nairobi
Maasai Mara · Nairobi
The final morning in the Mara begins before sunrise, a last game drive making the most of the reserve’s early hours. Breakfast at the lodge follows, and then the journey back to Nairobi – by road through the highlands, or by light aircraft over the landscape you have spent the past three days exploring on the ground. Either way, Nairobi receives you in the afternoon. One final overnight before departure.

Day 9: Departure
Nairobi
A relaxed breakfast, a last look at the city, and a private transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport brings the safari to its close. Nine days of Kenya, from Kilimanjaro’s shadow to the Mara’s open plains. The country has a way of following you home.
