Family Safaris Across East Africa
Where Africa Becomes Their Story
There is a moment that happens on almost every family safari, and no parent who has witnessed it ever quite forgets it. A child presses their face to the window of the game vehicle, eyes wide, utterly still, as a pride of lions moves through the grass twenty metres away. No screen, no commentary, no intermediary between them and one of the most powerful animals on earth. Just the child, the lions, and a silence that speaks louder than anything a classroom ever could.
East Africa does something to families. It slows them down, pulls them away from the noise of ordinary life, and places them inside experiences so vivid and so shared that the conversations they start in the bush continue long after the journey is over. Children who walk among giraffe and zebra on a guided island sanctuary in Lake Naivasha come home different. Families who sit around a campfire in the Maasai Mara listening to the sounds of the African night carry something from that evening for the rest of their lives.
Kenya and Tanzania offer a family safari landscape of extraordinary range. From the endangered species of Ol Pejeta Conservancy, where the last northern white rhinos on earth are protected around the clock, to the vast elephant herds of Amboseli moving beneath Kilimanjaro, to the drama of the Great Migration across the Serengeti plains. Every destination holds something that speaks directly to the curiosity and wonder of young travellers, and to the parents travelling beside them.
At Wondrous Wild, every family safari is private, paced for all ages, and built around the moments that matter most to your family specifically. With 28 years of East African expertise, we know that the best family safari is never one size fits all.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum age for a family safari with Wondrous Wild?
We design family safaris for children of all ages, and our itineraries are paced and structured to suit the youngest members of the group as much as the adults. That said, different destinations have different age guidelines – some camps and conservancies recommend a minimum age of five or six for game drives, while others welcome younger children with no restriction. Gorilla trekking in Rwanda requires all participants to be at least fifteen years of age, in accordance with Rwanda Development Board policy. When you speak with our safari designers, share the ages of all travelling children and we will build an itinerary that works beautifully for every member of the family.
Are game drives safe for children?
Yes. Private game drives are conducted from enclosed or open-sided 4×4 safari vehicles with experienced guides who are trained to manage every aspect of the wildlife encounter safely. Because every Wondrous Wild family safari is private, your guide can adapt the pace, duration, and direction of every drive to suit your children’s energy levels and attention spans – something that is simply not possible on a shared vehicle.
Many of our guides are exceptional with young travellers, bringing a natural gift for education and storytelling that turns a game drive into something children actively look forward to repeating.
What should we do if our children need a break from game drives?
East Africa’s best family camps and lodges are designed with exactly this in mind. Most properties offer swimming pools, nature walks, junior ranger programmes, and wildlife-themed activities that keep young travellers engaged between drives.
Our itineraries also include deliberate rest days and lighter activity options – such as walking safaris on Crescent Island, cultural visits to Maasai villages, and boat rides on Lake Naivasha – that offer a very different kind of wildlife experience without the structure of a game drive. Every Wondrous Wild family safari is built with breathing room, not back-to-back schedules.
How do you ensure the itinerary works for both parents and children?
The honest answer is that we design it from both perspectives from the very beginning. When families come to us, we ask as many questions about the children as we do about the adults – what excites them, what their attention spans are like, what kind of experiences have resonated with them before.
The result is an itinerary that delivers the wildlife depth and luxury that parents are looking for alongside the wonder, participation, and pure joy that children need. The best family safaris we have designed are the ones where it is impossible to tell who had a better time.
