Safari at a Glance
From the Wild North to the Deep Blue
11 Days · Nairobi · Samburu · Lake Nakuru · Maasai Mara · Diani Beach
Kenya is not one place. It is many worlds layered into a single country, and this journey moves through all of them. It begins in the arid north, in Samburu, where the landscape is ancient and the wildlife found here exists almost nowhere else on earth.
It continues south through the flamingo-pink shores of Lake Nakuru, then sweeps into the legendary Maasai Mara for three days of big game country at its finest. And then, just when the savannah has given everything it has, the Indian Ocean appears. Glass-calm water, white sand, colobus monkeys in the trees above the beach. For families who want Africa in full, this is the journey that delivers it. Eleven days. Four destinations. One story your family will be telling long after you’ve come home.
Detailed Safari

Day 1: Welcome to Kenya
Nairobi
The journey begins the moment you land. Your Wondrous Wild team meets you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and takes care of everything from that point on. A private transfer carries you to your Nairobi hotel, where the evening is yours to rest, settle in, and begin to feel the particular atmosphere of this city. Tomorrow, the wilderness begins.

Day 2: North, Into Samburu
Nairobi · Samburu National Reserve
The drive north from Nairobi is a journey in itself. As the city gives way to open country and Mount Kenya rises on the horizon, the landscape shifts from fertile green highlands to something older and drier and wilder. By the time you reach Samburu, the arid beauty of northern Kenya has already made its mark. Your first private game drive comes in the afternoon, and Samburu does not disappoint. This is the homeland of the Samburu Special Five: the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk – species found almost nowhere else in the world.

Day 3: A Full Day in the Wild North
Samburu National Reserve
A full day in Samburu reveals what makes this reserve so different from anywhere else in Kenya. Morning and afternoon game drives follow the Ewaso Nyiro River, where large elephant herds gather to drink and bathe in a scene that feels entirely timeless. The afternoon brings a visit to a local Samburu village, where the community opens its doors to share the traditions of one of East Africa’s most distinctive pastoral cultures. Children and adults alike tend to leave quieter than they arrived.

Day 4: The Rift Valley and the Flamingo Lake
Samburu · Lake Nakuru National Park
The journey south carries the family through changing terrain before the Rift Valley opens up and Lake Nakuru comes into view. This is a sanctuary of rare and remarkable things: white and black rhinos moving through the yellow fever trees, Rothschild giraffes browsing at the forest edge, and along the lakeshore, thousands of flamingos turning the water pink. A private game drive around the lake in the afternoon gives the family time to take it all in at their own pace.

Day 5: Into the Maasai Mara
Lake Nakuru · Maasai Mara
Few drives in East Africa build anticipation quite like the one into the Maasai Mara. The agricultural highlands fall away and the plains grow wider, the sky bigger, the sense of arrival more powerful. You reach camp in time for lunch, and the first afternoon game drive follows – your guide reading the land, tracking movement, finding the predators that make the Mara famous. The evening ends at the campfire, the day’s sightings still fresh, the stars above the reserve doing what they always do.

Days 6 & 7: The Mara, Fully
Maasai Mara
Two full days in the Mara is a gift, and the reserve uses every hour of them. Morning drives in the cool first light find predators still active from the night. Bush picnic lunches are served out on the open plains with nothing but grassland in every direction. Afternoons follow the Mara River, where hippos jostle for space and Nile crocodiles slide silently through the current. Evenings belong to the campfire and the stories that gather around it. The Great Migration, if the timing is right, brings wildebeest across these plains in their hundreds of thousands. Even without it, the Mara overwhelms.

Day 8: From the Plains to the Shore
Maasai Mara · Diani Beach
This morning marks one of the great transitions of the journey. After breakfast, a private transfer to the local airstrip sets the family up for a direct scenic flight from the Mara to Ukunda on Kenya’s South Coast. Watch the savannah shrink beneath you as the Indian Ocean comes into view on the horizon. By afternoon, the family is checked into a beachfront resort, warm water lapping at the shore, the whole mood of the journey shifting in the most satisfying way possible.

Days 9 & 10: The Coast, at Your Own Pace
Diani Beach
Two days on Diani Beach with no fixed agenda, which is exactly what a family needs after a week in the wilderness. Glass-bottom boat trips reveal the coral world beneath the turquoise surface. A snorkelling excursion to Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park takes the family into one of Kenya’s most beautiful marine reserves. A visit to the Colobus Monkey Sanctuary brings a different kind of wildlife encounter, intimate and unhurried, in the coastal forest above the beach. Or simply: pool, sand, ocean, repeat.

Day 11: Until Kenya Calls You Back
Diani Beach · Nairobi · Departure
The last morning is slow and deliberate. A final look at the ocean, breakfast without a clock, and then a private transfer to Ukunda airstrip for the short flight back to Nairobi. Connections to JKIA for international departures are smooth from here. Kenya sends families home differently than it receives them. Fuller, somehow. Already wondering when they can return.
