Everything You Need to Know Before Your East Africa Journey

Planning a safari is not like booking a holiday. It is a conversation, a collaboration, and ultimately a leap of faith in the operator you choose to place at the centre of one of the most significant journeys of your life. At Wondrous Wild, we believe that the right questions asked early make for a far richer experience in the field. Here are the ones our guests ask most – answered honestly, and in the spirit of the journey that awaits.

Planning your Safari

How far in advance should I book my safari?

For most East Africa safaris, we recommend booking at least six to twelve months in advance, particularly if your journey includes gorilla trekking in Rwanda, travel during the Great Migration season between July and October, or the Christmas and New Year period. Gorilla trekking permits are limited in number and sell out well ahead of time, and the best camps and lodges across the Maasai Mara, Serengeti, and Rwanda fill their calendars early in peak season. That said, we have built strong relationships across the region over 28 years, and where last-minute availability exists, our team will find it.

Can my safari be fully customised?

Every Wondrous Wild safari is built around you. The itineraries on our website are starting points – frameworks that give you a sense of the journey’s shape, pace, and destinations. From there, everything is tailored to your group size, travel dates, interests, and budget. Whether you want to add a beach extension, swap a destination, adjust the pace, or build something entirely from scratch, our safari designers work with you until the itinerary feels completely right.

What is the best time to visit Kenya and Tanzania?

Both Kenya and Tanzania offer exceptional wildlife viewing year-round, but timing does influence what you experience. The dry seasons – January to March and July to October – generally offer the best game viewing, as animals gather around water sources and the vegetation is less dense. The Great Migration crosses the Maasai Mara between July and October, bringing the dramatic river crossings that have made this one of Africa’s most iconic seasonal events. Rwanda’s gorilla trekking is possible throughout the year, with the dry seasons offering easier trekking conditions on the forest trails. Our team will advise on the timing that best suits what your particular journey is looking for.

Do you offer safaris for solo travellers?

Yes. While many of our guests travel as couples, families, or groups, we design private safaris for solo travellers with the same level of care and personalisation. A private solo safari means your own vehicle, your own guide, and an itinerary shaped entirely around your pace and preferences. We also advise on single supplement options across our partner lodges and camps to ensure the experience is seamless from arrival to departure.

The Safari Experience

What does a private safari mean, and why does it matter?

Every Wondrous Wild safari is private. This means your group has exclusive use of your safari vehicle and guide for the duration of every game drive – no shared vehicles, no waiting for other guests, no compromises on timing or direction. A private safari means your guide can follow a leopard into the forest for as long as the sighting holds, take the route less travelled, or simply stop in the middle of the plains for ten minutes of silence while a lion sleeps in the shade nearby. It is the difference between watching wildlife and genuinely being in it.

What level of physical fitness is required?

Most of our safaris are accessible to guests of all fitness levels. Game drives are conducted from the comfort of a 4×4 safari vehicle, and the physical demands are minimal. Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is the notable exception – treks can range from one to several hours of hiking on uneven, sometimes steep forest terrain, and a reasonable level of fitness is recommended. If you have any health considerations, let our team know at the planning stage and we will shape the itinerary accordingly.

Is East Africa safe to travel to?

Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda are all well-established safari destinations with strong tourism infrastructure and experienced ground teams. As with any international travel, awareness and preparation matter, and our team briefs every guest thoroughly on what to expect before arrival. Wondrous Wild has 28 years of operating experience across the region and maintains close relationships with local authorities and lodge security teams at every destination we visit. Our on-the-ground presence means that if anything changes, our team responds before it becomes a concern for our guests.

Are meals and accommodation included in the safari?

Our safari packages are quoted on a full-board basis, meaning all meals during the safari are included. Accommodation is arranged at carefully selected lodges and camps across each destination, chosen for their quality, setting, and the experience they contribute to the overall journey. Where specific lodges are not named in an itinerary, this is because availability is confirmed at booking stage – our team always selects properties that meet the Wondrous Wild standard for the category of safari you are travelling on.

Rwanda Gorilla Trekking

Do I need a permit for gorilla trekking, and how does Wondrous Wild handle this?

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda requires a permit issued by the Rwanda Development Board, currently priced at USD 1,500 per person per trek. Permits are limited to a fixed number per day across each gorilla family group, which is what makes advance booking so important. Wondrous Wild manages the full permit process on your behalf – securing your permits, confirming your trekking group assignment, and briefing you on what to expect before you enter the forest. With a resident Wondrous Wild representative based in Rwanda, the groundwork for your gorilla experience is handled by someone who knows this landscape and these logistics intimately.

What makes Rwanda a good starting point for an East Africa safari?

Rwanda works beautifully as the opening chapter of a longer East Africa journey precisely because of the contrast it creates. The country is green, intimate, and unhurried – a soft landing before the dramatic wildlife theatre of the Kenyan and Tanzanian savannah. Gorilla trekking in the Virunga forest is one of the most profound wildlife encounters on earth, and experiencing it first means the rest of the journey builds on an already extraordinary foundation. Our signature safaris begin in Rwanda for exactly this reason.

Conservation & Responsible Travel

How does Wondrous Wild approach responsible tourism?

Responsible travel is not a policy for us – it is built into the way we operate. We work exclusively with lodges and camps that demonstrate genuine commitment to low-impact, community-centred tourism. We support conservation projects, community-owned tourism initiatives, and the kind of operators who measure their success not just in occupancy rates but in the health of the ecosystems and communities they sit within. Our guests travel private and in small numbers, which minimises the footprint of every journey we design. We are happy to share the specifics of our responsible travel approach during the planning process.

Does Wondrous Wild offer carbon offset options?

Yes. We recognise that long-haul travel carries a carbon cost, and we believe in being straightforward about that. We work with our guests to provide guidance on carbon offsetting options for their journeys, including support for verified conservation and reforestation projects operating within the East Africa region. If this is a priority for your travel planning, let our team know and we will incorporate it into the conversation from the start.

Practicalities

Do I need a visa to visit Kenya, Tanzania, or Rwanda?

Visa requirements vary depending on your nationality, and they do change periodically, so we always recommend checking the latest requirements with the relevant embassies or official government travel advisories before departure. As a general guide, Kenya and Tanzania both operate e-visa systems that allow most nationalities to apply online in advance. Rwanda offers visa-on-arrival for many passport holders, and citizens of the majority of African Union countries enter visa-free. Our team provides a pre-departure information pack for every guest that covers the current entry requirements for your specific itinerary and nationality.

What vaccinations and health preparations do I need?

We strongly recommend consulting a travel health clinic or your GP at least six to eight weeks before departure, as some vaccinations require a course of injections over time. Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry into certain East African countries depending on your routing, and antimalarial medication is advisable for most safari destinations in the region. Our pre-departure pack includes a health preparation checklist, but the specifics of your own health needs should always be discussed with a qualified medical professional.

What should I pack for an East Africa safari?

Neutral-coloured, lightweight layers are the foundation of a well-packed safari bag – mornings in the bush can be surprisingly cool, while afternoons are warm. Avoid blue and black clothing, which can attract tsetse flies in certain areas. A good pair of binoculars, a quality camera, and a wide-brimmed hat for open vehicle game drives are practical essentials. For gorilla trekking in Rwanda, sturdy waterproof hiking boots and long sleeves are important. Our team sends every guest a detailed packing guide tailored to their specific destinations and travel dates as part of the pre-departure briefing.

Still have a question we have not answered here?

Our safari designers are always happy to talk through the details of your journey – however specific, however early in the planning process you are. Contact the Wondrous Wild team to start the conversation.
