Born to Be Wild
8 Days · Nairobi · Ol Pejeta · Lake Naivasha · Maasai Mara
There is a generation of young travellers growing up with a different relationship to wildlife – not just as spectators, but as people who understand what it takes to protect it. This journey was built for them, and for the families raising them. It begins in Nairobi, where endangered Rothschild giraffes eat from your hand at one of the continent’s most beloved conservation centres. It moves north to Ol Pejeta, a private conservancy protecting the last northern white rhinos on earth and home to Kenya’s only sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees.
The journey continues through Hell’s Gate, where families cycle freely through gorge country alongside zebra and warthog. And it ends in the Maasai Mara, where lions, leopards and cheetahs still move as they always have across one of Africa’s greatest ecosystems. Eight days of wildlife, wonder, and the kind of education that no classroom can offer.
Detailed Safari

Day 1: Nairobi and the Giraffes
Nairobi · AFEW Giraffe Centre
Your Wondrous Wild team meets the family at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and handles everything from arrival. After checking into your city hotel and taking time to settle in, the afternoon begins with one of Nairobi’s most memorable experiences. At the AFEW Giraffe Centre, the endangered Rothschild giraffe comes close enough to eat from your hand, and the centre’s guides bring the story of their protection to life in a way that stays with young visitors long after they’ve left. It is a gentle, joyful opening to a journey built around exactly this kind of encounter.

Day 2: North to Ol Pejeta
Nairobi · Ol Pejeta Conservancy
The drive north past Mount Kenya is scenic enough to hold the attention of even the most restless young traveller. By the time the family enters Ol Pejeta, one of Africa’s most celebrated private conservancies, the mood shifts to something closer to awe. This afternoon’s game drive takes in two experiences that exist nowhere else on earth. First, the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary – Kenya’s only home for rescued chimps, where the animals’ stories are as compelling as the encounter itself. Then, the northern white rhinos: the last two on earth, protected around the clock by dedicated rangers in one of conservation’s most watched chapters.

Day 3: A Full Day at the Conservancy
Ol Pejeta
A full day at Ol Pejeta reveals the depth of what this conservancy holds. The morning game drive focuses on tracking the Big Five across terrain that rewards patience and sharp eyes. In the afternoon, the children take centre stage. The Junior Ranger experience hands them the tools of the field: wildlife tracking skills, bushcraft basics, and a front-row encounter with the conservancy’s anti-poaching dog unit – working animals whose role in protecting wildlife is both thrilling and sobering for young minds to grasp. By the campfire that evening, the conversations tend to be more serious than usual.

Day 4: The Equator, the Gorge, and the Bicycle
Ol Pejeta · Lake Naivasha · Hell’s Gate
The drive south brings one of the journey’s most playful moments: a stop at the Equator line for a live Coriolis demonstration that has been confounding and delighting families for decades. Lunch at Lake Naivasha follows, and then the afternoon delivers something few safari experiences anywhere in Africa can match. Hell’s Gate National Park is one of the only places on the continent where families can rent bicycles and ride freely through the landscape alongside wild animals. Zebras graze at the roadside. Warthogs trot past. Towering volcanic gorges rise on either side. It is adventure without barriers.

Day 5: Into the Maasai Mara
Lake Naivasha · Maasai Mara
The road across the Great Rift Valley floor into the Maasai Mara is one of those drives that builds quietly into something memorable. The plains grow wider, the horizon stretches further, and by the time the family reaches camp and settles in, the Mara has already made its presence felt. The first afternoon game drive sets the tone: your private guide moving through the grasslands with the kind of unhurried confidence that comes from knowing this landscape intimately, the savannah delivering its first chapters of the story that will unfold over the next two days.

Days 6 & 7: The Mara at Its Finest
Maasai Mara
Two full days in one of the world’s great wildlife reserves, with nothing required of the family but to be present. Morning drives track the big cats when they are most active – lions at rest after a night’s hunt, cheetahs scanning the open plains, leopards moving through the riverine forest. When the Great Migration is in season, wildebeest herds stretch to the horizon in their tens of thousands. A bush picnic lunch served on the open savannah becomes one of those meals nobody forgets. A Maasai cultural visit in the afternoon brings the human story of this landscape forward. And for those who want to see the Mara from above, an optional hot air balloon safari at dawn offers a view that resets everything.

Day 8: One Last Drive, Then Home
Maasai Mara · Nairobi
The final morning brings a last game drive before breakfast and checkout, the reserve offering its parting gift to those willing to get up one more time. The drive back to Nairobi is comfortable and unhurried, the landscapes of the Rift Valley scrolling past the windows as the family processes eight days of encounters, discoveries, and stories accumulated across four very different corners of Kenya. The airport drop-off comes eventually. But Kenya has a way of travelling home with you.
